The idea of a possible sequel to Disney’s Big Hero 6 still continues to make rounds, despite directors Don Hall and Chris Williams having shied away from the prospect multiple times. Said prospect has now been brought up again, this time with word from one of the actors themselves.
Courtesy of Screen Rant, Genesis Rodriguez (who voiced Honey Lemon) was approached about the possibility of a follow-up to Big Hero 6 during a press junket for Warner Bros.’ Run All Night. Interestingly enough, she responded by saying this:
There’s rumblings of something else happening. I mean yesterday I just saw that it’s the third most grossing Disney animated feature, so this is huge for them. I doubt that they wouldn’t want to do another one. It was a huge success.
When pressed further about the subject, she brought up Big Hero 6‘s Marvel roots in relation to how Disney could move forward with the property:
Well, it’s a comic book, so they have so many… It’s a Marvel franchise that Disney adapted. Just like comic books, you could make it a complete different story and the superheroes reunited to attack someone else. So it’s a perfect little setup they got for a sequel if they wanted to.
When you’ve created a world where scientific and technological advances have given rise to superheroes (and villains), it’s hard not to see how Disney could resist exploring that world even further. While rushing a sequel is obviously not the best course of action, there’s no way that Disney isn’t planning a return trip to San Fransokyo at some point in the future.
In fact, a return to San Fransokyo may come sooner than you think. Last year, Joe Books announced an upcoming line of comic books and novels set in the world of the feature film. Once again, fans of Big Hero 6 would be wise to look out for them.
Big Hero 6 is currently on DVD/Blu-Ray and all digital platforms.
What do you think? In your opinion, could these ‘rumblings’ lead to something more?
