Much like the ever popular Penguins of Madagascar, looks like the giggly yellow Minions from Illumination Entertainment’s hit film Despicable Me are geting their own feature film spin off.
Deadline reports The Minions film will be an original story, introducing new characters in addition to bringing back old favorites from Despicable Me. Although the story will be brought down to the level of the yellow Minions, the main focus will be on their crazy hilarious antics as they interact with Groo and the other humans.
Thefilm is set for a 2014 release. Production is being coordinated with Despicable Me 2 (due out summer 2013), so that the films will be released a year apart from each other. Pierre Coffin will direct with Kyle Balda co-directing. Coffin is also currently directing Despicable Me 2, while Balda co-directed the original Despicable Me. The already completed script was written by Brian Lynch.
The Minions have proven to be immensely popular for Illumination and the series’ distributor Universale. The Minions not only have landed roles in next summer’s Despicable Me 2, but they also have a new 3D theme park ride at Universal Studios Orlando. Personally, I find The Minions hilarious. Considering the fact that The Minions don’t even speak English, let alone a discernable language, it will be interesting to see how much dialogue will be in the film (much like Pixar’s Wall-E).
