Sure, we may not be getting Disney’s The Little Mermaid as a theatrical 3D re-release, but come this Fall, we’ll be able to visit the world under the sea in gorgeous high definition! The Little Mermaid will be the next jewel in Disney’s prestigious Diamond Collection, and will hit Blu-ray and DVD October 1.
We still don’t have any images of the official US or UK cover artwork, but we now have our first look at the German edition DVD and Blu-ray covers!
The cover features Ariel sitting on a rock gazing at the world above, surrounded by Flounder, Sebastian, Ursula and King Triton (he’s hidden under the rating sticker). Even Floatsam and Jetsam make the cover! Strangely, Prince Eric is MIA, as is the (controversial) castle.
Overall, I quite like the cover. It’s colorful and vivid. Of course, like most of today’s Disney home video releases, I have a slight problem with characters looking a bit off-model. WHO drew Ariel and WHAT is wrong with her hair?! WHERE did Ursula get that tan?!
But, I’m actually okay with the overall image. I don’t like it as much as the 2006 Platinum Edition cover, but I don’t mind having this as the final Diamond Edition cover art worldwide (it most probably will be). I also think the US version’s title will have vertical lettering, to match previous Diamond titles.
Expect Disney to officially reveal cover art and bonus features anytime soon. Stay tuned to The Rotoscopers for the official announcement! Until then make sure you listen to our hilarious The Little Mermaid Episode!
Do you like the new cover artwork? What would you like to see on the official US covers? Let us know in the comments!
