Pixar on Sunday gave us a first glimpse of their new animated original short, The Blue Umbrella.
The short film is about “two umbrellas—one blue and one red—who fall in love amidst the rain of a singing city”. What stands out about the clip is the animation—Pixar never disappoints visually and this is no exception.
The animation is photo realistic and reminsicent of the look and feel of WALL-E. The character designs are cute and pleasant to look at—especially the faces on the two main umbrellas. The juxtaposition of bright red and blue against the mass of black umbrellas is striking. Although it is just a 30-second clip, we know it is a love story. How the story will play out remains to be seen, although personally I hope it’s different enough from Disney’s recent short Paperman.
The Blue Umbrella will be released in theaters in front of Pixar’s Monsters University on June 21.
